What is Acupuncture
Acupuncture Mechanism of Action
Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine and a way of natural healing that treats patients by inserting thin filiform needles with or without applying heat or electrical stimulation at acupuncture points in the body.
The Classic Chinese Medicine explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the pathway (Meridians) in the body. These channels can be influenced, and the flow of energy (known as “Qi”) or life force can be balanced by needling the acupuncture points.
There are about 780 acupuncture points in our body. And 12 Meridians runs through our body.
The earliest written record of acupuncture is found in the Huangdi NeiJing (黄帝内经; translated as The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), dated approximately 200 BC.
Modern studies have elucidated some of the mechanisms by which acupuncture works within the framework of western medicine.
Acupuncture activates measurable electrical charges along the meridians mapped by the ancient Chinese.
In addition, it has been observed that Acupuncture activates the release of chemicals in muscles, the spinal cord, and the brain.
-
Conduction of Electromagnetic signals: Western scientists have found evidence that acupuncture points are strategic conductors of Electromagnetic signals. Stimulating points along these pathways through acupuncture enables electromagnetic signals to be relayed at a greater rate than under normal conditions. These signals may start the flow of pain-killing biochemicals, such as endorphins, and of immune system cells to specific sites in the body that are injured or vulnerable to disease.
-
Activation of opioid systems: Research has found that several types of opioids may be released into the central nervous system during acupuncture treatment, thereby reducing pain.
-
Changes in brain chemistry, sensation, and involuntary body functions: Studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by changing the release of Neurotransmitter and neurohormones. Acupuncture also has been documented to affect the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions, such as immune reactions and processes whereby a person's blood pressure, blood flow, and body temperature are regulated.
In Summary, Acupuncture
1. It can help prevent illness and disease
2. It activates the self-healing and self-regulating power of the body.
3. It balances the flow of vital life energy (Qi) or life force.
4. It can bring you the optimal health, vitality, and well-being.
5. It is effective in resolving physical problems related to stress and emotional conditions.
